COMMON CAUSES OF YELLOW TEETH

COMMON CAUSES OF YELLOW TEETH

WHAT CAUSES TEETH TO YELLOW?

Your teeth are a critical part of your daily life. They help you eat, talk, smile and can affect your overall confidence and the way that you interact with the people you meet every day. We must take the proper steps to make sure we are caring for them adequately. More often than not, our teeth tend to become yellow and unsightly and knowing what causes this yellowing can help you to combat it.

COLORFUL BEVERAGES

The first and most common factor that makes teeth yellow is the beverages that we consume each day. Drinks like coffee, soda with dyes, and teas can all cause surface stains that when not properly removed, can sink deep into the tooth and become nearly impossible to remove. Red wines are notorious for staining teeth as their deep, rich color is helped by their acidity to sink into the teeth. These surface stains, when allowed to sit on the teeth, become deep-set stains over time that can only be removed by professional or deep teeth whitening.

ACIDIC FOODS

Foods that are highly acidic can also contribute to teeth yellowing. When teeth are exposed to acidic foods the top layer of the tooth, or the enamel, is weakened. This weakened enamel is more porous which makes it easier for stains to sink into the teeth and stain them permanently. Foods that have dyes, either natural like a beet or artificial like food coloring, can also contribute to teeth yellowing.

TOBACCO PRODUCTS

Foods and drinks are not the only thing that yellow teeth. Smoking and chewing tobacco can also cause staining in the teeth. Tobacco is a terrible thing to consume if you are looking to keep your teeth white and pearly. The natural color of the tobacco and the smoke that comes from cigarettes and cigars can both make your teeth dull and yellow. In some cases, medical conditions or medicines that you are taking can also weaken or yellow teeth.

INADEQUATE TOOTH CARE

The last major factor that contributes to yellow teeth is inadequate tooth care. If you do not brush the stains off your teeth each day they are more likely to become deep set and difficult to remove. The longer a stain stays on the teeth, the harder it is to remove. You should be brushing your teeth at least once a day, preferably twice, to remove food build up and stains that may be accumulating on the teeth.

HOW TO PREVENT OR REVERSE TEETH YELLOWING

There are a few different ways that you can help to reverse or prevent further yellowing. Whitening toothpaste is a great way to fight surface stains that are not all that deep and whitening mouthwashes are helpful as well. Brushing regularly is a must and taking the time to visit your dentist regularly is also necessary.

If you are still fighting yellowing, your dentist can help you to whiten teeth professionally. The helpful staff at Dobson Ranch Dental Care can help you figure out what whitening treatment is going to work best for you and can aid you through the entire process to get the smile you have always wanted.
